Accounting Manager

Dakota Fence Company is seeking a full-time Accounting Manager for its Fargo, North Dakota office. 


Accounting Manager


This integral accounting & finance position comprises the #2 role in the accounting department, and manages the day to day affairs of the accounting department, including management of three accounting staff members covering the accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other accounting functions. This position also works closely with the CFO to complete all monthly, quarterly, and annual governmental compliance tasks across the company, including month-end closing procedures and journal entries, sales/use tax, contractor’s licensing, insurance, and other external reporting needs. 

Ideal candidates should have a strong work ethic, be willing and able to lead the government and tax compliance function, while also understanding and managing the broader accounting functions of the organization across all areas. This role requires a motivated, self-starting individual with strong computer skills, knowledge of accounting practices and systems, and excellent organizational skills.

The principal job duties of this position are to: 

  • Management of accounts payable and accounts receivables employees, and coordination with branch administrative staff at all locations.
  • Carrying out month-end closing procedures, and update monthly financial reports for review and submission to management. 
  • Leads the organization and implementation of monthly/quarterly/annual governmental compliance tasks across all entities.
  • Responsible for the submission and calculation of sales/use tax reporting for all applicable jurisdictions.
  • Month-end account reconciliations, and financial report preparation.
  • Improvement of monthly close calendar to help decrease the month-end close cycle across all entities and branches, and help keep all contributors accountable for timely completion their respective tasks.
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements and best practices.
  • Job-level and branch-level profitability analysis and reporting. 
  • Assistance with annual financial statement audit/review by outside accounting firm.
  • Ad-hoc reporting and business case analysis.
  • Assistance with annual budget preparation, including forecasting cash needs. 
  • Assistance with monthly financial analysis, including variance reporting and historical comparisons. 

Other duties as assigned by CFO.


Experience and Skills Required:

  1. Demonstrated strong technology and computer skills required. 
  2. Construction or related industry knowledge and experience preferred, including job costing and work-in-progress entries. 
  3. Strong familiarity and experience with local/state/federal tax and compliance tasks. 
  4. Active CPA license, or willingness/ability to pursue, will be favored.
  5. A high degree of personal integrity, strong professional judgment, and positivity. 
  6. Relevant professional certifications, including payables certifications are beneficial. 
  7. Organizational abilities to track multiple deadlines and reporting requirements.
  8. Strong desire to learn and grow, and creative problem solving skills. 
  9. Ability to suggest and implement process improvements. 
  10. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and have good public relations skills.
  11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.


Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

BS degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field from an accredited college is required.  Minimum five (5) years of directly related experience is required, and CPA is a plus. Experience with government compliance, including licensing and sales/use tax is a plus.
